(2010) A group of Japanese musicians were loaned a piano from its owner Yoko Matsuba, an 84-year-old survivor of the nuclear bombing. The piano was used in a concert which took place in the autumn at the United Nations headquarters in New York in order to promote global peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons. The instrument was in the Hiroshima home of Matsuba-san when United States aircraft dropped the first atomic bomb over the city on August 6, 1945.The piano, bought by Matsuba’s mother in 1933, sustained only slight damage after being toppled over by the explosion, despite its location only 1.3 km from ground zero.
Musicians involved in the piano project plan to perform concerts with peace-themed music in as many as 40 places in Japan using the historic instrument, including Kyoto and Nara. ”We hope to convey how precious peace is through the beautiful sound of the ‘atomic bomb piano’ which survived that horrible experience,” Mr Kajita told Kyodo News. As survivors become fewer and memories fade, these pianos have come to symbolize ‘survival’ and ‘hope’ in the minds of people who desire a peaceful future. For many people in the world, the cross has come to symbolize ‘hope’. During the days of the Roman Empire, it was used as an instrument of torture and no one would think of wearing it as jewelry! It is now worn by millions across the world as a symbol of the ‘hope’ that we have in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Let us think of the hope we have in Christ Jesus because of His death on the cross and His resurrection. We have peace in this hope for the future with Christ in heaven.
